Singer's Featherweight 222K is my ultimate quilting & sewing dream machine!
Singer made the Featherweights with aluminum instead of cast iron or steel, the light weight of aluminum making it so light that sewists attending sewing or quilting classes prefer to bring this tiny machine with full size stitch quality and ease of use!
The Featherweight is also an excellent first sewing machine for anyone beginning to sew. It has few knobs adjustments, allowing the beginner to focus on the most important sewing stitch- the straight stitch. To lock the beginning and end of each seam, the 222K has a reverse stitch activated simply by raising the stitch length lever to the top, and place it back down to the previous setting to sew forward.
All of your sewing tools fit in your Featherweight case, even your buttonholer! The Featherweight 222K truly is the ultimate portable mechanical sewing machine, and while they are relatively rare, thanks to Ebay and the internet, you can make one your own! While the 221 often sells for $200 or so, the 222K typically sells for over $900, with $1,200 being the norm.
A built in light and bobbin winder are also welcome additions both at home and at sewing classes. After all, who wants to bring their sewing lamp from home in addition to bringing their sewing machine to class!
The 222K had many different sets of attachments that were included in the original purchase, some of which include a buttonholer, a ruffler, tucker, multi slotted binder, seam guide, an adjustable hemmer, a rolled hemmer presser foot, and a shirring foot. Additional available attachments include a zig zagger, a blind hemmer, a zig zagger that had 12 or 16 different embroidery stitch cams, including the arrow, ball, scallop, walls of troy, icicle, and multi stitch zig zag. Singer also designed a hemstitcher and picot stitcher for each of their straight stitch sewing machines, but you must have the appropriate throat plate for your particular machine.
The 222K is also "treadle able", many collectors actually prefer being able to set their 222K into a table & attach the treadle belt so they don't require electricity to sew with this treasure! Singer also made a special portable sewing table that you could set your 222K right into, and these are often seen on Ebay, though prices tend to be $89 & up! If you love to sew, enjoy attending sewing classes, & spending time with others who enjoy the same things, the 222K just might be the "dream machine" ou are looking for!
