Sewing Shortcuts Tips & Tricks
I often have difficulty with sewing, things like threading needles, tying a knot in the thread, before starting to hand sew, and similar issues. I recently found an excellent Youtube video, from which I learned a super great, fast trick for threading needles, tying a knot in the end of the thread, when sewing by hand, & more!

- Thread a needle trick (Rub the eye of the needle, back & forth across the thread, as it lays on the fat pad on the palm of your hand, & it threads itself, as long as the eye of the needle isn't too small for the thread. It may help to use a piece of rubber band, or suede, if your hand is too dry to create friction, between the thread & eye of the needle, and the palm of your hand.)
- Perfect knot for hand sewing Tying a knot at the end of your thread, once you have threaded the needle, hold the tail of the thread, parallel with the needle, with the cut end of the thread, at the same end as the eye of the needle. Now wrap the end of the thread around the needle, 3 to 4 times, and pull the needle through, and it will tie a perfect knot, right at the end of the thread, in a second!
- DRAW YOUR OWN PATTERN WITH SOAP! It washes out, without damaging fabric!
- Winding thread around a thread cone, or toilet paper or paper towel roll, cardboard core, very quickly, by sticking the cone, or empty cardboard roll core, on a single egg beater for your hand mixer, turn on the mixer, & it will wind it very quickly! (A bobbin or spool, can be wound on an electric drill.
- Make a quick work APRON- out of old jeans, with back pockets, simply cut the jeans legs & crotch off, below the back pockets, and in the front, cut off the front pockets, but keep the waistband intact. Button the jeans waist around your waist, spin the back pockets to the front, & you have a handy work apron, with pockets to hold your pliers & scissors, as you work!
- Quick ironing tip! Need to iron something small, quickly? Use your hair flatiron!
- Basting tape- for smooth sewing, the new basting tapes allow you to place your zipper, button, or fabric, on the spot you want to sew it, without pins, so your stitches won't pucker, and will be smooth!
- GLUE STICK WASHABLE- use washable gluestick to temporarily baste items in place before you sew them. Let it dry, then stitch!
