Sears Kenmore 158.1602 1601 1701

Kenmore 1602 photo on left, with 1601 to the right (not all of 1601 shows)

1601 dials, note the slender needleplate with a single hold on the left, of one end, for straight stitching, flip it to the other end, for zigzag stitches. It is difficult to see, with the presser foot in the way, but sometimes, you can find this needleplate on Ebay, in sets of  Kenmore accessories for sale, if your machine is missing the slender needle coverplate. Upper left dial stitch width, right top dial is for short, medium, or long stitch modification, on stretch stitches, upper large dial is stitch length & reverse in the center, lower large dial is stitch selector, as well as having a cam setting, for when using the type C stitch cams. Note the feed dog control, and light switch are on the bed of the machine.

1601 is CENTER HOMING NEEDLE
Searspartsdirect.com shows 158.16020 (no cams)

158.1601 is nearly identical to the 1702 and 1802
but according to Searspartsdirect.com 1602 does not take cams

WON'T STAY IN STRAIGHT STITCH OR ZIGZAG
STITCH WIDTH DIAL TURNS BY ITSELF!

Video explains where to clean and oil, until this stops causing those issues.

A wonderful individual, David Goboff, created a Kenmore sewing machine Model Chart which helps tell what each model can do, and what accessories originally came with them. Here is a link to his chart.
