Because my first personal sewing machine was a brand new Sears Kenmore 148.1560 model, bought in 1978 for $178 at Sears, I honestly thought that the only presser feet available for sewing machines, were what came with mine. I was in 4th grade, at the time, so I guess that makes it more understandable, but there were actually many more presser feet, and attachments for sewing machines, beginning clear back in the 1850's!
For my favorite vintage Sears Kenmore sewing machines, the original feet and attachment sets were very basic, but still more than I knew how to use at the time.

Sewing machine feet and accessories
Only when I got my first Bernina sewing machine, did I realize the luxury of having specialty presser feet, of professional, industrial quality, were ever available to home sewers! Bernina presser feet are expensive, and they only fit Bernina machines, and you have to match the Bernina shank type to the age of your Bernina sewing machine, though there are adapters available to sew with low shank feet, on a Bernina sewing machine, but you have to make sure you match the presser foot's needle opening, to the size of the needle opening in your machine needleplate. If they aren't an exact match, you will hit your needle on your presser foot, so this is very important to test by turning the handwheel, before sewing with feet not originally made for a Bernina. (This applies to all sewing machines.)

Bernina 530-2 presser foot set in the accessory case which attaches to a post on the back of the 530 (the 630 & 730 & other models in the 500, 600, & 700 series of Bernina model sewing machines, also had this type of accessory organizer, with locations for thread spools, bobbins, the small black metal needle changing tool (mini screwdriver with a pin to help it lock in place easily, without slipping) needles, screwdrivers, a cleaning brush, a set of presser feet, the quilting guide, and a darning ring |

Bernina presser feet in the old old style, organized in a fishing tackle box, with a guide for setting the 930 for stitches. I placed a paper identification chart for old style Bernina feet, is underneath the organizers (I cut it in strips so they could fit in the rows, so I could put the correct foot in the correct slot.) Bernina has some of the very best presser feet available, that make difficult sewing tasks much faster and easier. Their buttonhole cutting knife and block (chisel) makes buttonhole cutting easy and accurate, with various sizes of blades, the Bernina darning and embroidery rings are absolutely incredible, and really help make darning and embroidery easier, since they are on a rod that attaches to the machine bed, to help you control your movements of the project more easily, for neater darning and embroidery! |

Bernina Sewing Machine Feet in a Bernina Accessory Tray with insert organizers. Far left Accessory tray and insert for Bernina 1000 -1630 models, this narrow white tray box, snaps against the back of the freearm on the Bernina 1000-1630 model sewing machines, forming a small bed extension, like a flatbed machine. I printed out the Bernina presser feet informational pages, and shrunk them 1/2 size, so I could put them in here, to help me identify feet, and use them properly. I taped them to the top of the accessory tray, on each side of the handle opening. A Bernina compatible ruffler is shown, and a set of stitch samples sewn on stretch denim, with my Bernina 830 sewing machine. The feet in these trays will fit and sew on Bernina old style machines 530-1630, though these are mostly the old style feet (5 mm needle opening), not the old old style feet (4 mm needle opening) |

Viking Husqvarna snap on presser foot set, can also be used on many other sewing machines with the correct snap on adapter, this set worked on my Bernina's, by using a Viking Husqvarna snap on shank, set into a Bernina old style low shank foot adapter. There are all kinds of adapters for various types of sewing machine shanks, so you can use special presser feet, but you MUST make sure that the shank to needle position is correct, or your sewing machine needle may accidentally strike the foot, damaging the foot, breaking the needle, sometimes knocking a machine out of timing. Note the dark thick plastic thing that looks U shaped in this photo is actually one end of a "hump jumper' for leveling the presser foot, when sewing over thick seams, or hems. If your presser foot isn't level, your stitches will not be even, because the feed dogs won't be able to move the entire piece of fabric evenly. |
|
Viking Husqvarna computerized model fits neatly around the frearm of the machine, and has special storage locations for the bobbins, each snap on presser feet, the hump jumper, quilting guide, screwdrivers, and seam ripper. A round thread cap is also included. |

The shirring pllate and cording /braiding plates, and the long bobbins (shuttles) won't fit the Singer 221 & 222, or other low shank Singer sewing machines, they will only fit the Vibrating Shuttle Singer models, but the remainder of the accessories & feet will work for the 221, 222, and other low shank Singer sewing machines (as well as the low shank straight stitch class 15 clones.) |

Singer 66 model, first version, with the back clamping presser foot set. Later models of 66, had a low shank presser foot bar, and used regular low shank straight stitch presser feet. There is an adapter to change the backclamp shank to use low shank feet, but they are difficult to find, and relatively expensive. You can change out the presser foot bar, to a low shank presser foot bar, as well, if you cant' find the back clamping Singer 66 feet. |
