Kenmore low shank buttonholer with plastic cams, in a more traditional buttonholer style
Kenmore 90 can use the same geared buttonhole plate as the 1753. The 1703 and 1803 cannot.
Whether a geared plate fits your machine, is one of the important details in whether it will fit your Kenmore sewing machine or not. There are at least 3 sizes of flat buttonholers, apparently, I haven't measured them all myself, yet, but I do know I have tried some buttonholers on various machines, and they did not fit. |
Noticeable difference in size of the important upper left front part of the plates that butts against the Kenmore sewing machine, in front of the bobbin area. |
I believe the plate with the lines, was my Kenmore model 1815 plate, the left front width is about 29 mm the depth of the plate is around 73 mm |
Kenmore buttonhole geared plate 34 mm? for the left front section on a plate with a depth of 78 mm (I took these in 2014, don't remember which machines, though, will attempt to check and update)

KENMORE BUTTONHOLER GEARED PLATE MEASUREMENTS
My measurements are in millimeters, LF is Left Front (installed) Side (Left side as installed)
(Warning- my measurements are as accurate as I can tell, I took photos, but they aren't perfect, could be off by 1 mm each side)
Model #
90, 1753 LF 34 mm x Side 78 mm
1703, 1802, 1803, 1815 LF 29 mm x Side 73 mm
The front of the buttonholer geared plates (& Monogrammers) is one area where you will find differences. Some have a narrower left front section than other models, so you may be able to snap it in place, but if this plate moves during sewing, it will not make a good buttonhole, so I don't recommend using the wrong size plates.
Kenmore 1802 geared plate is too small for the 90 (158.902) Notice how the front left section for the 1802 is narrower than the same section on the model 90. (1802 geared plate is snapped into the model 90 opening, the regular coverplate is at the bottom of the photo for the 90. |
Most of my Kenmore sewing machine feet and parts do NOT have part numbers anywhere on them. This plastic buttonholer cam is one of the exceptions to that. |

Kenmore 1931 freearm geared plate for buttonholer, with 2 Kenmore buttonholer styles which do fit the 1931 |
Kenmore geared buttonhole plates come in a variety of sizes, the 1802 is the top one here, the bottom plate is for model 1430 |
3 Kenmore flat buttonholer styles, metal for the 1802 on left, beige plastic buttonholer fits 1931, and green plastic buttonholer with a "dial a buttonhole cam" (UPDATE- The green dial a buttonholer is for the 158.1430) |
Underside of Kenmore dial a buttonhole size cam flat buttonholers (UPDATE- The green dial a buttonholer, with the FAT screw, is for the 158.1430 and 1410) |
Kenmore flat buttonholers apparently have at least 2 different thicknesses of screws that screw into the bed behind the presser foot, and one, the green dial a cam on the right in the photo above, has a much FATTER, thicker screw. I finally discovered the 1410 and 1430 both use this green lollipop style dial a cam size buttonholer, with the FAT screw!
Left screw for 158.1430 is much thicker than the buttonholer screw on the right. These screw into a threaded hole in the machine bed, behind the presser foot, fot these flat buttonholers to work. These are the dial a size buttonholers, that have the cams built in. |
Fat screw Dial a buttonholer is for 158.1430, the other Dial a buttonholer fits many Kenmore models |
