Kenmore Sewing Machine Feet and Adapters version 2

Sears, in an attempt to compete with Bernina's "Quick Change Presser Foot System", created a similar quick change presser foot system, for their EXCLUSIVE Super High Shank presser feet sewing machines. Only Kenmore's top of the line models came with the ability to use these presser feet, and if it is properly adjusted, and you use the correct feet, this works beautifully. Kenmore did not make as wide of a variety of specialty presser feet, compared to Bernina, but they did a great job of competing for the less expensive market for luxury sewing machines.

Notice the adapter foot has a very unique shape to it, and a lever on the back of the foot part,
allowing the adapter feet to be narrower, than the version 2 set of presser feet for the 1802

Kenmore 1802 Super High Shank Presser Feet illustrations in manual (be aware not all 1802 came with the same set of feet & accessories, the numbers to the right of the 1802, are what indicate which set of accessories and knobs, your machine came with)

TIP- ALWAYS make sure you are purchasing the correct feet for your sewing machine model's "homing needle position". Some zigzag sewing machines sew a straight stitch in the LEFT HOMING NEEDLE POSITION, only, not the center of the needle opening in the needle plate. If a machine has multiple needle positioning, you don't need to worry about this, but if it does not, you do need to make sure you have the correct feet.  There are specific presser feet made for these models, and it is ESSENTIAL you only use the straight stitch feet, rufflers, shirring foot, and any other single tiny needle hole presser feet made specifically for these machines. Otherwise, the needle may hit the foot, and snap, which can cause injury. (This can also knock a machine out of time, and can damage the machine, though it can be retimed, and damage can sometimes be polished out of the metal parts.)

How to tell if a Kenmore super high shank presser foot is left homing, or right homing? On the clear plastic feet, and the metal super high shank feet with the slot cut on the left front of the presser foot, and a groove is made in the center of the presser foot, to indicate what would be center homing needle feet, and the feet with the slot cut in the center front of the presser feet, but a groove cut on the left, is for the left homing needle machines. (I do not know how long they used this system, I only noticed it after collecting a LOT of Kenmores!) This is NOT on the adapter feet (binder, rolled hemmers, edge stitcher) or the shirring foot.

NOT ALL MACHINES HAVE THE SAME ZIGZAG STITCH WIDTH- so pay attention to this, when buying feet for your machine. 4 millimeters is usually the narrowest zigzag stitch, but some models sew a 5mm zigzag stitch, some newer models, even wider. You need the zigzag presser feet needle opening to be the same width as your needle plate zigzag opening.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you ONLY use the U shaped shank super high shank presser feet with your Kenmore luxury models, because they are the only ones which can be used with the quick change adapter setup. The first super high shank Kenmore I got,  had C shaped super high shank feet, which cannot be used with the quick change system, so I got rid of them, and bought the correct presser feet sets, so I don't make the mistake of removing the quick change system again. I honestly thought I hated luxury Kenmore's initially, simply because I didn't have the correct super high shank presser feet with the U shaped top, and had to use a screwdriver to change feet all the time! Once I got the right feet, I LOVE the KENMORE QUICK CHANGE SUPER HIGH SHANK presser foot system!
Kenmore sewing machine models came out in a variety of versions, with minor detail differences, part of which included a variety of presser feet set. The 1802, for example, came out in several versions, and each one had minor decorative details, and/or presser feet sets, with more or less presser feet and cams.

Kenmore SUPER HIGH SHANK system uses this lever, which you simply lift up, to release the foot. To remove the foot, push down, on the lever, an the foot slips right off! It isnt' quite as sturdy, and high quality as Bernina's, but it is WAY CHEAPER! The lever is held onto the proprietary presser foot screw, (which has reverset threads at the skinny end, and regular threads on the beginning of the screw) by a tiny REVERSE THREADED nut, and an even tinier screw is used to prevent the lever from being moved too far down, so it can't accidentally come off. There is a THREAD CUTTER BUILT INTO THE QUICK CHANGE LEVER!     This photo shows the OVERLOCK PRESSER FOOT,
overedging upholstery fabric used to make a bag, so it won't fray.

KENMORE SUPER HIGH SHANK SHIRRING FOOT, being used to gather a ruffle on my dress. I used the longest stitch length, for extra gathers. To gather even more, you can tighten the upper tension, but I didn't need to. I am using the SEAM GUIDE to ensure my gathers are sewn at the same depth in the fabric.

Q FOOT with missing "toe" made perfect adapter for use with binders and hemmer folders, which I attach to a swing away attachment, on the 1803

You can use a professional binder, and attach it to a swing away attachment, so you can use it on the Kenmore sewing machines. I am sewing spandex ribbed binding on a stretchy tank top, using a knits needle. The presser foot is actually a Q FOOT, which is missing the front of the presser foot "ski" on the right side, as the foot faces me. This makes it perfect for use with a binder attachment! (I didn't want to waste the Super High Shank Q foot, when it arrived, with a broken toe, when I used it for this, I was very glad I KEPT it! I did file the broken edge, so it wouldn't snag the fabric, but this worked GREAT!)

SUPER HIGH SHANK TO LOW SHANK ADAPTER with a low shank snap on adapter on 1703

SUPER HIGH SHANK TO LOW SHANK ADAPTER with low shank adjustable zipper/cording foot on 1703

Kenmore super high shank presser foot adapter from Central Michigan Sewing Supplies purchased on eBay, then I use different low shank snap on presser feet adapters, and snap on presser feet, on machines I don't have the accessories for. This also allows regular low shank presser feet to be used on Super High Shank Kenmore sewing machines

Kenmore super high shank machines can use a super high shank to low shank adapter foot, then use low shank feet, or snap on presser feet.

Kenmore Super High Shank to Low Shank adapter, combined with a low shank snap on adapter, can make it possible to use most of these snap on presser feet, but ALWAYS test by turning your handwheel, to ensure your needle will not hit the presser foot, before attempting to sew with feet that did not come with your machine, when it was new. Some models are left homing needle, and others are center homing needle, which means some presser feet will be hit by the needle, if you don't test first!

The top center two needle threaders shown here, are top- Kenmore front threading needle threader, and the FLAT green metal Kenmore needle threader, is for the side threading needles. THEY ARE NOT interchangeable, the needle holders get in the way, if you use the wrong one. If you have one of these fabulous needle threaders, DON'T LOSE IT, THEY ARE HARD TO FIND!

SUPER HIGH SHANK ADAPTER USED WITH LOW SHANK SNAP ON ADAPTERS that I use on my Kenmore 1803 and 1802 Notice the white on the front is to make threading your needles easier.

TIP- there is also a low shank snap on adapter foot with a little red release button, which also works with this super high shank to low shank adapter, but you cannot leave the screw in the back of the snap on adapter, that would normally hold any quilting guides, or the screw top, will block you from installing the adapter.

*****FOR DIFFICULT FABRICS A STANDARD LOW SHANK ROLLER FOOT CAN BE USED WITH THE SUPER HIGH SHANK PRESSER FOOT ADAPTER. I prefer to use a low shank metal roller foot, if I have one available, if not, I use the clear roller foot with the super high shank to low shank adapter, and a low shank snap on adapter.

Kenmore 1803 and 1703, and 1802, I use the Super high shank sewing machines
with SUPER HIGH SHANK ADAPTER AND LOW SHANK SNAP ON ADAPTERS (at top of box, on left, then 2 snap on adapters) TIP- NOT ALL FEET WILL FIT, always test by turning the handwheel, when testing to see if a presser foot will work with your machine. Some models are left homing needle position, for straight stitch feet, and ONLY presser feet for this style of machine can be used for any straight stitch applications. Standard straight stitch feet will NOT fit on those left homing needle machines, except the zigzag feet.

LOW SHANK KENMORE FEET

Kenmore 1753 sewing machine is a LOW SHANK center homing needle sewing machine, with luxury chainstitch adapter, all metal buttonholer, and takes type C cams, so it is able to not only sew zigzag satin stitches, but the decorative STRETCH STITCHES, TOO!

Low shank Kenmore WALKING FOOT - be aware that a special extra long screw is sometimes needed for Kenmore sewing machines to use a walking foot. Without that, there is nothing for the fork to attach to, to activate the walking motion. The fork fits over the needle thumbscrew, or the special screw, and as the needle goes up and down, it moves the walking foot. I only have a low shank Kenmore walking foot, at the moment. You can use a roller foot, instead, if you need to, for vinyl, leather, velvet, velour, and spongy fabrics.

Kenmore SEW BY COLOR LOW SHANK PRESSER FOOT SET
cam with a pack of cards showing how to use each accessory. The green part is the edge stitcher, the blue ones are rolled hemmers in various sizes, the silver one is the smallest rolled hemmer, the bias binder is orange, the red foot is shirring, the adapter is silver with a red thumbscrew for the adapter feet, there is bias cutting gauge for your scissors, a cloth guide (brown)and a yellow adjustable zipper/cording foot, a red and silver quilting seam guide, and a set of red handled screwdrivers, along with a silver, red, black and blue ruffler!
KENMORE MODEL 90 WITH LOW SHANK PRESSER FEET AND STITCH SAMPLES SEWN TO MATCH THE INSTRUCTION CARDS which came with the presser foot set the green screwdrivers are from a later model, the SEW BY COLOR set I had was low shank, with red handled screwdrivers. Model 90 has MULTIPLE NEEDLE POSITIONS, so it can use standard center needle low shank feet, or left homing presser feet, but if possible, a set of the original presser feet are best, since they will have the correct width of needle opening for zigzag stitches that this model was manufactured to sew.

TOP CLAMPING FEET

Kenmore made by White 117.551 the feet did not come in this box originally, I had the tin box, it was empty, so I put the feet for this Kenmore in it. The TOP CLAMPING FEET come in a variety of widths at the top of the "shank", and the needle hole in the feet, has to match up to the machine, in addition to the shank having to fit on that specific model, another important clue, when trying to match up feet!
