Sewing Machine Repair Manuals Resources and sites

Finding books and manuals for servicing and repairing vintage sewing machines, can be difficult. The favorite among "Old Sewing Machine Mechanics", are the two Sincere's sewing machine service books. This is book 1, apparently, this at this link you can download, or read it online.

 Sincere's Sewing Machine Service Book

I don't have book 1, I have book 2, for zigzag sewing machines.

These next 2 have some good information, but a few inaccuracies, though. His book recommends white lithium grease, but it turns to cement, so I do not recommend it to anyone! It is what new techs are trained to use on newer machines, but those machines aren't expected to last 20 years or more.  I prefer machines that will outlast my lifetime!

For Sears Kenmore Sewing machines, you can find diagrams of the various systems within the machines, as well as their accessory sets, by going to

Type your machine's entire code from the nomenclature plate, for example, 158.18130 you type just the numbers, no decimal. You may need to choose "sewing machine" from the results they give you.

If you are able to find a service manual for your particular machine, that will be the best resource, but those are not always available to the public, and many have probably been dumped in landfills, when the major home sewing market tanked, after the NAFTA treaty.
