Singer 14U series Sergers Repair

 Under construction 7/22/2025

The Singer sergers in the 14u series of sergers, are very well made, and are good enough to be worth cleaning and repairing them yourself, if you want a good serger, and can't afford to have them serviced and repaired by others.

Tension unit repairs-

My aim with my phone camera is not great, making videos, but I do as well as I can, lol! The tension units did not have tension release, when raising the presser foot, on the 14u64A I made this adjustment on.

When the tension loses strength, you can adjust it, by tightening the position of the knob, in relation to the star shaped (nut?) which calibrates your tension. You could replace the spring, too, I suppose, if necessary, but the plastic tension dial has a nub, which interacts with the star shaped nut, so where you position it, affects your tension, either loosening it, or tightening it. Don't be afraid to try! Without tension, a serger cannot make good stitches, so by being willing to try fixing it yourself, you are learning, but also saving a machine, which would otherwise be thrown away, or used for parts.

Cleaning out old dry sticky oil, using qtips, toothbrush, or paintbrushes dipped in rubbing alcohol, or lamp oil, to clean out old oil, can take a serger (or sewing machine) from frozen, to fast, and fixed!

I use Tri Flow oil, or sewing machine oil, to lubricate, and if any gears require grease, I use SuperLube grease.

It can take a few cycles of cleaning and oiling, to fully free up sticky parts, but good machines are worth repairing and maintaining.
